Two net weights found on the old course of the river Ouse. They could date anywhere from the Neolithic to the Roman period. The stone came from the limestone outcrop at Wicken which is the remains of a Jurasic coral reef. The stone is reasonably soft and could be drilled by using a hard stick, sand, water and patience. They would have been tied to a net made from hemp or nettle fibres to keep it close to the bed of the river until it was hauled in, hopefully with a catch of fish or eels.
