GREAT OUSE – LITTLE THETFORD

The clubs water on the Ouse is approached from the A10 via a right turn into Little Thetford, carrying on through the village and over the railway crossing down to the river bank. From the car park the water extends some 1000yds upstream and 2000yds downstream.The river is weed and reed lined along the margins, providing good fishing just over weed beds were 8-12ft of water can be found. The predominant species are Roach and Bream with Rudd, Perch and Bleak. It also contains a reasonable head of Tench to 6lb+ and some very large Carp although the later are not often landed.

The stretch is approached via the same route as the Ouse, however approx 100yds before the level crossing take a right turn down the gravel track and then take the first left off and follow the grass track between the fields down to the railway bridge. The club water stretches 350yds upstream (to the right) and 450yds downstream to it’s confluence with the Gt Ouse. The river produces good mixed nets with a good number of Rudd that can run to over 1lb, plenty of skimmers and Roach to 1lb+, Bream and a few Tench. The Old West is currently rated by the EA fisheries surveys as an “A” class fishery with a higher fish population than either the Ouse or Cam. Boats traffic can be heavy at weekends but in fact has no effect on the catch rates.
